The mental game in sport is incredibly important, but the problem that many athletes currently experience is that it’s not easy to work on because it is not tangible, especially if you try to do it on your own.
I use my education, playing experience and coaching experiences to guide athletes to clearly understand what mental skills they need to work on to help them improve their mental game so they can maximize their performance in their sport.
Mental skills training can be the key to unlocking an athlete’s full potential. Most players invest a lot in their physical and technical skills, but are underperforming because they have not invested enough in their mental skills training. While sport is 90% mental, how much of your time is being spent training the “mental game”?
At Nine Zero One, we use a simple 3 step process when working with our athletes:
Step 1. AWARENESS
This involves a comprehensive assessment of the athlete to better understand their mental strengths and mental opportunities for improvement. For athletes that are 13 years and older, we use the Troutwine Athletic Profile (the TAP) which provides a comprehensive, detailed report for the athlete, parents and coach. For athletes that are younger than 13, we use a series of interview questions to acquire the necessary information to assist the
Step 2. STRATEGY
The output from the assessment provides the athlete and Nine Zero One the opportunity to discuss strategies and tools to help close the mental skills gap. A plan for success is developed and we work together to make sure the athlete follows the actions identified in the plan.
Step 3. ACTION
With consistent application of the discussed strategies and tools, we expect the athletes to develop a regular routine and implement “HABITS of EXCELLENCE”.
